Standing apart in a crowded marketplace

With a new visual identity, Hull York Medical School needed help to diversify its predominantly undergraduate brand collateral for a postgraduate market.

Through its brand positioning as a different kind of medical school, HYMS wanted to help students make an informed decision about their studies, and also attract a high calibre of applicants. First, we set about bringing the brand to life with a sophisticated and professional feel.

Using their secondary colour palette and refining some of the brand assets, our studio team developed a distinctive postgraduate campaign with its own style, whilst still maintaining the values of the Hull York Medical School brand.

Testimonial

“I have always found Sowden’s to be extremely responsive and creative. Over the last year they have helped translate our brand for our key postgraduate audience, and bring out our key messages in an impactful and distinctive way. They can also turn a job round really quickly so I know I can rely on them if a major deadline is looming. I look forward to working with them on future campaigns.”

What we did

We developed a suite of brochures, pull up banners, posters and web graphics with a distinctive look and feel that still felt part of the HYMS brand but stood apart in a crowded postgraduate market, full of savvy students.

Competitor analysis was a key part of the process, giving us valuable insight into how to position Hull York Medical School’s offering.

Eye-catching covers brought medical subjects to life through intriguing photography, alongside striking images of medical students studying and enjoying life on campus. With lots of important information to get across, the layout needed to flow in an engaging way to keep the reader interested.

The tone of voice and messaging was developed around the ethos of ‘delivering exceptional medical education’, maintaining that pioneering approach throughout the marketing materials.

Supported by banners, posters and web graphics, the campaign is proving popular with students so far and application numbers are up for one of the UK’s leading medical schools.
