Sowden & Sowden and Hull Folk Festival support budding journalists

Sowden & Sowden supported pr and journalist trainees at a professional masterclass in the city.

The event, which was open to all, took place on Tuesday 9 September and was just one of a series of masterclasses taking place at Creator College; a new arts and media training centre situated in Queen Victoria Square.

Aptly named ‘Press Pack’, the events were designed to help enhance the appreciation and understanding of public relations and journalism in music. The six evening workshops combined Neurocreator™ tools, expert pr and journalist knowledge and a variety of activities to help broaden the minds of the attendees to the dynamic world of the media.

Funded by The James Reckitt Trust through Hull Libraries, trainees were taught a variety of information research techniques and given access to a wealth of data and crucial online sources only available through the library. Graduates were given Press Pack ID cards which gave them free access to participating venues for reviews and previews.

As part of these activities, a live press conference was established each night with a guest band. Notable bands included; Life from Birthday Records, Steve Cobby from Fila Brazilia, and Barmmy Boy from Sierra Leone.

Sowden & Sowden attended the event to provide their expert PR knowledge and to discuss the strategy behind the Hull Folk Festival, being the organiser of the annual event. Emma Fee, Lyn Acton and The Dyr Sister who played at this year’s Hull Folk Festival, joined them on the panel.

Polly Sowden, Director at Sowdens said “We were really excited to join such great names in sharing our knowledge with the trainees. The Creator College is a fantastic resource for us all. It’s particularly important to help exchange ideas and develop our media techniques in the run-up to 2017 and we were pleased to help.”

Attendees to the event then undertook some live reporting at the Hull Folk Festival, helping to cement their new knowledge by building relationships with the artists and media in a more practical setting.

Creator College Director Mal Williamson commented: “We aim to raise the game for all the bloggers and online magazines in the area. Their work has a huge impact for the arts and by offering them training we expect a spin-off in new magazines and quality interviews which in turn will help all the artists.”
