From Newland Ave to Rotterdam!

This weekend sees Newland Veterans FC head to Rotterdam to take part in the inaugural Anglo Dutch Trophy. Hosts V.O.C. Rotterdam will be hoping to clinch it, but we’ve got a surprise for them.

Over 70 Newland FC supporters will be heading across with the team to show their support including one of our own, Polly. With a roof-raising crowd of support we’ll be surprised if the 1m high trophy doesn’t come back to its home in Hull.

As great as the event is for both club and country, it’s not as easy as you might think to organise an officially sanctioned (by the FA, Netherlands KNVB and UEFA) match.

“It took us over 3 years to find the right opposition” said Paul Pacitto, Newland FC Secretary. “V.O.C. Rotterdam appealed to us because of the unique links between our cities. V.O.C. is the second oldest club in Rotterdam after Sparta, who are a professional club.”

Whatever happens in Rotterdam, fans from both clubs can look forward to a return fixture in Hull sometime during 2016, with plans to make it an annual event.

Dave Plews, the Newland FC Chairman is readily looking forward to the fixtures, “It’s a great time to start this collaboration with Rotterdam with the UK City of Culture only 18 months away. We look forward to offering the Dutch a very warm welcome when they travel to Hull in 2016 for the return fixture”

And the final word from V.O.C manager Bas Gerretson: “V.O.C. stands for ‘’Volharding Olympia Combinatie’’ and was founded on the 1st of January 1895. As such we take pride in our club belonging to the oldest in the country and we are in fact the second oldest in Rotterdam (the oldest being Sparta, best known as a professional football club). This may explain why tradition, style and sportsmanship play an important role in both our history as well as our present philosophy.V.O.C. is a professionally run club with excellent facilities, yet we are able to preserve all the charms of an amateur atmosphere in the most positive sense of the word, where friendship and sportsmanship go hand in hand. We are really looking forward to welcoming Newland F.C. to Rotterdam”.

See you in Rotterdam!
