Work experience that means business: Edith’s week at Sowdens

Hey, I’m Edith and this is a taster of my week at Sowdens…

About me

I am a 15-year-old student with a keen interest in gaining real-world experience, I feel incredibly fortunate to have had the opportunity to complete my work experience week at Sowden & Sowden based in Hessle, East Yorkshire. This experience was a stepping stone towards my future career aspirations.

I am a Year 10 student, studying Business, PE, and Geography at GCSE level. I enjoy all these subjects, especially PE as I compete in swimming for KUHSC, where I push myself to achieve new personal bests in the pool. In addition to swimming, I play netball for Reckitts, enjoying the fast-paced teamwork and strategy of the game. Balancing both sports has taught me the importance of discipline and time management. I am always eager to take on new challenges and take advantage of new opportunities.

My interest in business stems from a fascination with how companies operate and grow within competitive markets. Studying GCSE Business has deepened my understanding of various business functions, including finance, management, and marketing. This is why I chose Sowden & Sowden for my work experience; their reputation for innovative marketing solutions offers a unique opportunity to witness first-hand how effective marketing strategies are crafted and implemented.

Why Sowden & Sowden

I chose to pursue my work experience at Sowden & Sowden because of my keen interest in marketing and its dynamic nature, which aligns perfectly with my GCSE Business studies. The opportunity to work at Sowdens, a renowned marketing company has allowed me to gain hands-on experience in various aspects of marketing, from digital campaigns to brand management.

Whilst at Sowdens, I’ve sampled everyone’s job roles and experienced how they contribute to the agency and put their efforts into the work produced. Each job role is as vital as the other, and everyone works together, they create the skilful team that make Sowden & Sowden.

What I have learnt

I enjoyed my experience, learning valuable life skills that will be beneficial for my potential future in marketing. I learnt about the process behind ad campaigns and the knowledge required to host a successful campaign. I saw what goes into building brand awareness and retaining high numbers of customers for one of their clients. As this was done effectively, the client then achieved an increase in customers for their business and the products they sold.

Another part of the week was meeting the team and going around to sit with them experiencing a taster of their roles in the business. I especially enjoyed this as it helped me gain a deeper understanding of how their roles were vital. It was fun to explore the process of creating and uploading organic social content for a client and the process of creating and maintaining a social content calendar. I experienced the teamwork of Sowdens as each member contributed equally, creating a final high-quality result for any work they output.

I also spent time with specific team members learning about digital marketing, including paid digital campaigns and SEO. This intrigued me as I considered the thought, effort and money that goes into an advert for the public to see and hopefully click and purchase what is offered.

Throughout my time at Sowdens, I had the opportunity to learn so much about the digital marketing world. I was very grateful for all the team’s support for the week and enjoyed my short time there.
