Sowdens win sponsor for Hull Folk Festival

Hull Folk Festival, which is coming to the Hull Marina and Old Fruit Market area on 30th & 31st August, is the first in the city to be purely focused on folk music and will celebrate folk culture, its traditional values and varied styles, with events for all the family.

The festival has been given extra support by KC, who has kindly sponsored the now aptly named KC Family Folk Den, which will be the central hub for family activities at the festival.

Situated down Humber Street and running throughout the festival on Saturday 31st August, the KC Family Folk Den will be alive with the sound of music and educate families on traditional values of the folk world.

KC Community Relations Manager Anna Millar said: “We’re delighted to be supporting Hull Folk Festival through our KC in the Community programme. The KC Family Folk Den will give families visiting the festival a chance to get involved and ‘hands on’ with the festival, whilst educating them about the heritage of folk music and our great city. It’s a great opportunity to showcase our cultural offering, especially as we’re shortlisted for the City of Culture 2017, attract people to this part of the city and give children an experience to remember.”

In Jackanory Corner children will experience the world of folklore, with our guest storyteller amazing painting a vivid picture that brings the stories to life. There’ll also be a chance to learn how to story-tell yourself, with helpful tips and guidance for all those that want to learn a new craft.

The fun doesn’t stop there, with arts and crafts for the kids to get involved with, including badge making, instrument making and knitting workshops to dive right in to. Although the KC Family Folk Den is a part of the festival for the day, we wanted to give children and parents the chance to take away a new art, a new craft and a lasting symbol that they were a part of the very first Hull Folk Festival.

The two-day festival, which is funded by Hull City Council, takes place on Friday 30th and Saturday 31st August in and around the Humber Street, Hull Marina and Victoria Pier area.

Portfolio Holder for Leisure and Culture, Councillor Terry Geraghty, added: “It’s great to have a partnership with KC for the festival and it’s great to involve them in a project that is for the whole community. With our bid for City of Culture coming to fruition, the KC Family Folk Den will give Hull yet again, something to celebrate especially with the heritage and culture that the whole festival represents.”

Based inside an unused warehouse and transformed into the KC Family Folk Den, activities will run from 11.30am to 5.30pm to give families visiting the festival a chance to get ‘hands on’ with everything that is going on.

The aim is for the festival to leave a lasting impression for year’s to come, with plans for the scale of it to grow each year. KC can say that they were there from the start, can you? If you’d like to sponsor any of our activities please get in touch at [email protected]
