Read moreLocal born folk legend Martin Simpson is named as a headliner at one of the two main ticketed gigs at the 2014 Hull Folk Festival.
Martin headlined the Fruit stage near Hull Marina on Friday 12 September, supported by The Young‘uns. The final night of the festival (Sunday 14) saw the New Rope String Band take to the stage at Jubilee Church on King Edward Street.
The three-day event, funded by Hull City Council, celebrated Hull’s folk music heritage whilst showcasing new and local talent. Ticketed headline gigs were supported by local music across several venues including Minerva, Fruit, Thieving Harry’s, the Maritime Museum, King Billy, Black Boy and Sailmakers.
Festival organiser Polly Sowden was delighted to secure three such well-known folk acts: “Following the success of last year we wanted to bring big names from the world of folk music to Hull, which we think we’ve achieved.
“Martin Simpson is outstandingly talented, having been nominated for more folk awards than any other artist and will be supported by The Young’uns, a band with a unique and lively performance style.
“This year we extended the event to three days and spread it across more venues, culminating in the New Rope String Band gig on Sunday night, which was a good one. “We couldn’t wait to welcome all these bands to the UK City of Culture 2017.”
